Washington DC OG Barbecue Lunck 04/05/2008
Old Georgian Barbecue Lunch in the Washington DC area on Sunday,
May 4, 2008.

Dear Washington DC hub Old Georgians (this term always includes Georgettes),

I'm pleased to forward Johnny Lucas's e-mail with information about the very successful OG Club Centenary Dinner held at St. George's College, Quilmes, on Saturday, April 26, together with the attachment containing
his Floreat Domus speach (it takes up many pages because it is in the very large print he used in order to easily read it for delivery).

Transcribed below is the is the text of the greetings note from our hub that Gerald sent the OG Club to be read at said dinner:

"Warmest greetings from the Old Georgians of the Washington DC area in the USA. Let us remember on this evening of celebration all the Old Georgians that have gone before us, whose unrelenting efforts have made this great entity what it is.

We will gather on May 4 at Gerald Richardson's home for a parrillada con buen vino Argentino, with family and friends, to toast the continued
health of St. George's, the Old Georgian Club, and all that they stand for.

Floreat Domus always!"

It then listed the 11 of us expected to attend our celebration on Sunday: Luis Arnal, Bellido, Deane, Fairclough, Kerr, Nothwanger, Ryan,
von Goithmann, Richardson, myself and Krebs (from who I'm awaiting confirmation that his back problems have eased up sufficiently to allow him to join us), and 8 who are unable to join us for various reasons: Enrique Arnal, Child, Delacre, Dolan, Lutz, Mackenzie, Rath and Ruseler.

Since the weather forecast for the DC area mentions the possibility of rain on Saturday night and scattered showers on Sunday morning before a partially sunny afternoon, with a temperature of almost 70*, I would
like to remind those who have confirmed their attendance that in the event of inclement weather the reunion would move to inside the
Richardson's spacious home.

If you need maps and instructions on driving to the Richardson's home (908 Lynch Drive, Arnold, MD 21012-1505) you could obtain them on the Internet's MapQuest, or ask me to forward you the more detailed ones that Gerald e-mailed me two years ago (which show a variation in the route for the last mile, and also requests that your car be parked in
the parking lot of the barn across the street from their home (which is a white house with a 3-car garage). In case you have any problems on the way there, don't forget to take the Richardson's phone number: 410-987-3420. I will leave my home around 11 a.m. on Sunday, before which if necessary you could contact me at 301-881-0097.

As stated in the invitation e-mailed on April 5, the reunion starts at 12:00 noon with an assortment of appetizers, including empanadas and Argentine type chorizos on bread, plus hard and soft drinks, followed by a sit down meal at around 1pm consisting of various barbecued meat cuts, salads, desserts and drinks, including Argentine wine.

We should be 10 or 11 OG's, including one Georgette, and 11 or 12 adult guests (wives and friends) plus two-and- a-half-year-old twin boys. Also present might be all or some of the Richardson's 3 adult sons and their girlfriends. The camadas of said OG's range from 1944 to 2000 and their ages from 81 to 25. Unfortunately, due to medical problems the hub's two eldest OG's Delacre and Mackenzie (86 and 85) cannot join us.

Please remember to bring cash and/or checks to pay for the lunch (about $30 per adult) and to make donations to the OG Club and the Fundacion Educacional San Jorge (unless you prefer to send these directly to Buenos Aires).

Best regards and looking forward to seeing those attending the reunion on Sunday.

Douglas McCallum (Haxell/Agar '47).

South African Gathering 27/04/2008
South African OG reunion. By Rep Alan Ross.

Here follows a short description of our gathering in South Africa on Sunday 27 April 2008, to celebrate the Club's centenary. I have just read David Parsons' report headed Some Enchanted Evening which brought
waves of nostalgia. And, from his penultimate paragraph, it seems that my prophesy in our greetings message was not far off the mark. I said that it was likely that on that Sunday morning we would be en route to la chacra de Robin Parsons at the time that many of you were about to go to sleep. Bearing in mind that we are 5 hours ahead of you, your 3
a.m. is our 8 a.m. Adrienne and I started from Johannesburg, where we had been staying with our daughter and her family, as did Henry Rankin who lives there, and we were both on the road at 7.30 that morning for the 4 hour drive to Robin's place.

Also mentioned in our greetings message, six of us gathered that Sunday and five sent their apologies. Those present were Ian 'Paco' Ker, Alan Ross, Peter 'Chaco' Kember, Carlos Peria, Enrique Rankin and our host, Robin Parsons. (Henry Rankin explained that his tie was the only OG emblem he had, so he put it . Four of the missing were hampered by distance: Dick Crawford and Roland Minor living in Kenya,
Tom Walters and Roderick Shearer in the Cape. Peter Ingouville was the fifth absentee, recovering from a hernia op. Most of us were there with our wives, our hosts also had their daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren plus a couple of guests, which made a total of 16. Robin and his lovely wife Catriona treated us royally. Cat had made her classic empanadas criollas, on which we pigged out while the meat was cooking on the parilla. El parillero was that well known entertainer of bygone years, Peter 'Chaco' Kember. The beer and the red wine flowed and we toasted the College and, of course, the Club in its 100th
year.

As the meal progressed, from the house a dusty guitar appeared which had belonged to one of the Parsons daughters and the entertainer of bygone years was encouraged to sing for us. He apologised at the outset saying that as he hasn't sung seriously for over 20 years his voice was not going to cope for too long. But with sensible lubrication Chaco led us in many songs, starting with "La Vida Sigue Igual" and eventually ending with the Beatles' "Yesterday". Then, fortunately, a guitar string broke and saved Chaco's voice from doing the same.

A little incident amused us all. The Parsons' grandson, aged 3 or 4, was so intrigued with Chaco's guitar playing that he eventually stood
in front of him and banged his hand on the guitar while Chaco was singing. The troubadour - nothing phased - said "El pibe tiene ritmo" and carried on singing as best he could. From which you'll gather that he is the same, laid back and cheerful chap he always was.

It had been a beautiful autumn day in the Natal Midlands: sunny and warm with no wind, so all the festivities were out in the open on the
large front lawn. After coffee and alfajores, que son otra especialidad de la Sra de Parsons, tal como las empanadas, nos tuvimos
que despedir. As we hadn't organised a 'collective' bus - as David Parsons described it in his report - we ate in vast excess but went
carefully on the wine, conscious that most of us had a 2 hour drive back to Durban. So ended another special OG day.
